Monument at Dawn
Why do I love this so much? When I took this photo, I was meeting some photographer friends at the Tidal Basin at dawn one spring morning. As I hurried to join my friends on the other side of the pool, the sky was turning this vivid purple color and I was stunned by this scene. Torn between continuing on to find my friends and setting up my tripod right there at that very moment, I decided I couldn’t bypass this opportunity. I set up my tripod and camera and took a quick photo of the screen on the back of my DLSR using my cell phone because I didn’t want anyone to ever doubt the true colors I would capture. I did not edit the colors in the raw image in any way.

Now, years later, I still revisit this moment in my mind and I wanted to do more than just remember it. So I painted a little mini impression of it using fountain pen ink and watercolor paper. This was one of my first fountain pen and ink impressions. I can’t even say that it’s a drawing or painting because it’s really more an impression. I always did love Monet. Not that I’m even close to a Monet, but that’s where my passion and inspiration originate.
